watersedgePriti Lathia - Alcohol Ink Painting

The Chelmsford Art Society is presenting Priti Lathia who will be demonstrating Alcohol Ink Painting. As a professional artist and teacher, she likes to try new techniques and materials. With any media she uses, her work has a vibrant, colorful and joyous feeling. The artist loves to paint nature as well as be inspired by the places she has visited; and paints still life subjects that have inspired her.

Lathia took art lessons as a youngster but never thought of it as a career. Her turning point was taking some art classes at Middlesex Community College. Her teacher asked her to teach a class after looking at a couple of her assignments. Since then, she could see a future in art and gained confidence that she was an original and real artist.

After seeing Lathia’s work in some local art shows for the last several years, many parents brought their children to her for art lessons. She teaches art to a large number of children three days a week at St. Mark’s Church in Westford, from September to June. In addition, she offers private lessons, and teaches art in her home.

watersedgeThomas R. Dunlay - Oil Painting

The Chelmsford Art Society is featuring noted artist, Thomas R. Dunlay, who will demonstrate painting a landscape in oil. He was born in Weymouth, MA. His father, who was an amateur painter, introduced him to painting at an early age. Later he studied for two years at the Massachusetts College of Art. He was not satisfied with the curriculum there, so he searched for sound training. He found it with Robert Douglas Hunter in Boston and Provincetown and then at the atelier of R.H. Ives Gammell.

Dunlay studied with Gammell in Boston and in the summers in Williamstown from 1973 to 1979. He continued to study and follow in the Boston School tradition. His paintings reemphasize what he learned about value and color, putting it down and leaving it. It was important to stay on track.

Dunlay has won many awards including the Sagendorph Award from “Yankee” magazine, and two John Singleton Copley Awards from the Copley Society of Boston. He has had exhibitions at Cocker Gallery and Hammer Galleries in New York City. Dunlay’s painting subjects include landscapes, figures and still life painting.

He presently lives in Westwood, MA and summers in Nantucket where he can often be seen painting en plein air.
