Since she always had an interest in art, she went back to school and earned a BA in Fine Arts from Northeastern Univ. After graduating, she began teaching Art in the Lowell Schools.

Robin Thornhill - Encaustic with Pastels

Born and raised in MA, Robin Thornhill has spent much time enjoying the coast and admiring the marshes and beaches of New England. This area is the inspiration for most of her paintings. The artist is primarily self-taught and always ready to learn. Over the years, she has taken courses which include life drawing, design, advanced drawing and painting with oils, pastels and encaustics. This type of art, encaustics, is also known as hot wax painting. It involves heated beeswax to which colored pigments such as pastels or oils are added. Encaustics were originally used in Egypt to paint the faces of the dead on the mummies. This method has preserved these portraits over thousands of years.

Thornhill is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, a juried member of Oil Painters of America and The National Assoc. Of Women Artists, a member of the Newburyport Art Association and the Experimental Art Group of Rockport, and a core member of the Band of Brushes, an en plein air group based in Newburyport, MA.
