We are excited to announce that Madison Koufos is the winner of our 2025 Scholarship! This amazing artist graduated Dracut High and is going to major in the Fine Arts at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.
Madison ~ Growing up autistic, I often struggled when it came to communicating and expressing myself conventionally with words. However when I started to doodle in my notebooks and eventually into sketchbooks, I discovered a new way to express myself.
In these little drawings, I could express my feelings at the time and the ideas that I had. And eventually, my connection to art would connect me to others who had felt the same. Art became more than just a hobby to me but rather a way to connect to the world when I couldn’t in any other way.
When I started, I couldn’t stop. I started to draw every single day to improve and to be able to express myself better. For a while, I taught a lot of these things to myself by using books and videos online. But eventually, I started to take art classes outside of school for a few years in middle school. Overtime, my passion in art moved past just drawing, but into other forms such as painting and ceramics and even other niches such as crochet and writing.
In my senior year of high school, I earned the title of Most Outstanding Artist in my school. My art was also accepted into Congresswoman Laurie Trahan’s Annual Art Show of the Congressional Institute’s Annual Art Competition and the U Mass Lowell Annual Regional Art Show.
I will be attending Tufts’ School of the Museum of Fine Arts with my first major focus into the arts. There, I’ll learn not only how to create but also to be able to create in a way that’ll be impactful for society.
Entering my next stage of life, I hope to forge a path that’ll benefit not just myself but the world around me. Whether it’s painting by painting or book by book, I want to not only create art but to create progress for the world.
We wish her wonderful success in her future in art.
Congratulations Madison!
Thank you Sarah Breault, Madison’s Art Teacher at Dracut High, for recommending that she apply!
